Heat Exhaustion – Watch Out for These Signs
Heat exhaustion in pets is fatal and it only takes 15 minutes for a dog to die from it. Since pets are limited to few sweat glands located in their paws and around their nose, they cannot cool themselves as humans do. This makes them more susceptible to heat exhaustion. This fatal condition is entirely preventable and there are plenty of precautions to take.
Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion
- high body temperature
- lethargy
- excessive panting
- excessive drooling
- a red or purple tongue and/or gums
- staggering legs
- glassy eyes
- seizures
- increased heart rate
- vomiting
- unconsciousness
How to Prevent Heat Exhaustion
It is possible to prevent your pet from heat exhaustion by keeping these tips in mind.
Avoid Leaving Your Pet in the Car
Even if you will not leave in them in the car for a long amount of time, do not leave them in the car. This is the most common way dogs are killed in hot temperatures and it should be avoided at all costs.
Breaks from the Heat
Don’t allow your pet to be in direct sunlight or in humid temperatures for excessive amounts of time. Provide adequate shade and bring your pet into colder temperatures to allow them to cool off.
Make Sure They’re Hydrated
Always keep fresh water out for your pet where it is easily accessible as this will prevent dehydration. You can also feed them ice chips throughout the day as a treat that will keep them cool and aid in keeping them hydrated.
Avoid Long Walks or Playtime
When it is especially warm and humid outside, do not keep your pet outside running or walking for long periods of time as this will further exhaust them.
Avoid Hot Surfaces
Whether it’s the sand or asphalt, keep your pets away from these hot surfaces as it can damage their paws and lead to an increase in their body temperatures.
